📌 Passport Seva Requirement: India's Passport Seva Online Portal requires passport photos to be under 20KB, JPEG format, minimum 600×600 pixels, white background. Our tool meets all these specifications automatically.
Passport Seva's automated photo checker is stricter than most people expect. It does not just check file size — it also scans for face detection, background uniformity, and image sharpness. A photo that looks fine to your eyes might still fail if the background has slight shadows or if your face covers less than 70% of the frame. The portal needs the photo under 20KB, minimum 600×600 pixels, white or off-white background. This page targets 18–19KB to stay safely under the 20KB ceiling without going so low that quality suffers. If Passport Seva rejects your photo, try taking a fresh photo in front of a white wall in natural daylight.
Use a passport photo with white/off-white background, full face, neutral expression. Taken within last 6 months.

Passport Seva Photo Checker — What It Actually Looks For
Passport Seva's photo upload system runs four checks automatically before accepting your file. Most guides only mention file size, but that's just one of them. Understanding all four saves you from going back and forth on the portal.
Check 1: File size under 20KB, JPEG format
This is the obvious one. The file must be JPEG — not PNG — and under 20KB. This tool targets 18–19KB specifically to stay safely under the ceiling. It also auto-converts PNG to genuine JPEG, not just a renamed file.
Check 2: Minimum dimensions — 600×600 pixels
Passport Seva needs a minimum of 600×600 pixels. A small screenshot or a WhatsApp photo that's already been compressed to a low resolution will fail here even if the file size is fine. Start with the original photo from your phone camera — don't use a photo that's already been sent on WhatsApp.
Check 3: Face must cover at least 70% of the frame
The portal runs a basic face detection check. If there's too much background or the face is to one side, it fails. For best results: hold the camera at face level, stand about 45cm from a white wall, and make sure your face fills most of the frame.
Check 4: Background uniformity
The background must be white or off-white, without shadows. Indoor tube lights often cast a yellow tint. Natural daylight near a window gives a cleaner white background than any studio light for phone cameras.
📷 Works for More Than Just Passport
This page is calibrated for Passport Seva's 20KB ceiling, but the same compressed file works for: Aadhaar update portal (UIDAI, under 20KB), PAN card application (Income Tax portal, 10–20KB JPEG), Voter ID update (NVSP portal), and most driving licence applications on the Sarathi portal. One photo, multiple uses.
🔗 Same Photo for Aadhaar and PAN Too?
The same 20KB JPEG you compress here works for Aadhaar updates on the UIDAI portal and PAN card applications on the Income Tax portal — both need JPEG under 20KB with a light background. For exam applications, each portal has different requirements: see the full exam photo size guide which lists exact KB and pixel specs for 22+ Indian exams in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions — Passport Photo 20KB
How to compress passport photo to 20KB for Passport Seva portal?
Upload your passport photo, keep the slider at 20KB (default), click "Compress Passport Photo", and download. Passport Seva Online requires JPEG under 20KB with minimum 600×600 pixels and white background. Our tool hits exactly 18–20KB while preserving face clarity for successful submission.
What happens if Passport Seva rejects my 20KB photo?
If Passport Seva rejects your photo, the most common reasons are:
1) Background not white enough, 2) Face too small in frame,
3) Photo quality too low. Re-take in front of a plain white wall
in natural daylight, crop so face fills 70-80% of frame, then
re-upload and compress here.
What photo size is required for NEET 2025–26 application?
NTA NEET requires a JPEG photo between 10KB–200KB, with dimensions of 3.5×4.5 cm (passport size), white/off-white background, and the candidate's name and date printed below. Set our slider to 50KB for NEET — it's within limits and gives much better quality than 20KB.
What are the Aadhaar card (UIDAI) photo requirements?
UIDAI accepts JPEG photos under 20KB, minimum 200×200 pixels, with clear face visibility and light background. No heavy editing or beauty filters. Our tool compresses to exactly 20KB in JPEG format — fully compatible with the UIDAI Aadhaar update portal and mAadhaar app uploads.
Will the compressed 20KB photo be accepted by Passport Seva?
Yes, provided your original photo meets content requirements (white background, clear frontal face, recent photo). Our tool handles all technical checks: JPEG format, under 20KB file size, minimum 600×600 pixels. The Passport Seva portal's automated checker will pass these specs every time.
Can I compress a passport photo taken on a mobile phone?
Yes. Mobile photos often have EXIF orientation data that causes rotation issues on portals. Our tool automatically detects and corrects EXIF orientation so your photo appears upright regardless of how it was captured. Works on all Android and iOS cameras.
